1. many ---- plenty of, a large number of, numerous, a wealth of, a host of

 

A) plenty of 很多,大量的 (可接可數和不可數名詞)

 

例句:

(1) But there are plenty of things we can do.

(2) There's plenty of players who were impressive today. 

 

B) a large number of 很多 (跟可數的名詞連用)

 

例句:

(1) They have a large number of troops in Iraq. 

(2) His comments were deeply offensive to a large number of single mothers.

 

C) a wealth of大量的,豐富的  (跟可數的名詞連用)

 


例句:

(1) They have come in for a wealth of criticism. 

(2) We have a great wealth of talent in Wales.

 

D) a host of 許多 一大群

 

例句:

(1) Both countries are exploring collaborating in a host of areas.

(2) Now a host of companies are rethinking that logic.

 

E) a large amount of 大量; 一大堆 (跟不可數的名詞連用)

 

例句:

(1) By any yardstick, that's a large amount of money.

(2) Heat a generous amount of olive oil in a large frying pan

 

F) a lot of / lots of許多的; 諸多 (跟可數、不可數的名詞連用)

 

例句:

(1) I have also learned a lot of technical skills. 

(2) There are lots of savings we can make there.

 


 

2. more and more

 

A) more and more 越來越; 越來越 ...; 日益

 

例句:

(1) More and more machines were powered by steam engines. 

(2) All the nice areas in Florida are becoming more and more urbanized. 

 


 

3. The number of

A) The number of + 複數名詞 + 單數動詞 = the amount of =總數

 

例句:

(1) The number of people in a country or city

(2) he number of commuters to London has dropped by 100,000.

 


 

4. people—individuals, citizen, the public, those who advocate, opponent

 

A) individuals (N./ Adj. ) [口語]人(常指有趣或有點特別的人)( individual的名詞複數 ); 與眾不同的人; 某種類型的人;個別的;單獨的;獨特的;有個性的

 

例句:

(1) For individuals, things get a little more complicated. 

(2) The media seems obsessed with hyping up individuals or groups.

 

B) citizen (N.) 公民; 國民; 市民; 平民

 

例句:

(1) The life of ordinary citizens began to change.

(2) He's a citizen of El Salvador serving in the U.S. military.

 

C) the public 公眾,民眾; 人們

 

例句:

(1) The public were invited, but few turned up.

(2) When did the allegations come into the public eye?

 

D) those (people) who = They / people who = Such (people) as + 複數動詞 凡是…的人們

 

E) advocate(辯護)律師; 提倡者; 支持者;提倡; 擁護; 鼓吹; 為…辯護

 

例句:

(1) Cambone was a strong advocate for war against Iraq. 

(2) He was a strong advocate of free market policies and a multi-party system.

 

F) opponent (Adj. /N.) 對手; 反對者; 敵手;對立的; 敵對的

 

例句:

(1) He described the detention without trial of political opponents as a cowardly act.

(2) It was a good victory against a good opponent.
