托福常見單字與片語 (一) 

 

1) abroad (Adv) 在國外;到國外;廣為流傳的;在戶外的;室外的

例句:

Ⅰ. There'll still be a feeling abroad that this change has to be recognised. 

Ⅱ. Compressing everything into three years also leaves less time for growing up, engaging in extracurricular activities, and studying abroad

 

2) abundance (N.) 大量;充足;豐富

例句:

Ⅰ. The shallow sea bed yields up an abundance of food.

Ⅱ. One attributed the postponement to an abundance of caution. 

 

3) absence (N.) 缺席;缺勤;不在;不存在;缺乏

例句:

Ⅰ. Much of the concern among politicians about the state of American universities today is focused on the absence of "real world" education—which means preparation for professional and scientific careers

Ⅱ. In the absence of a will the courts decide who the guardian is.

 

4) accident (N.) 意外;不測;事故

例句:

Ⅰ. They range from minor cases of deliberate damaging of things to much more serious offenses, such as car accidents involving drunk drivers or bank robberies but Florence has to report all of these violations from the thief who took typewriters from every unlock room in the dormitory to the thief who stole one million dollars worth of art work from the university museum.

Ⅱ.  Through some unfortunate accident, the information reached me a day late.

 

5) by accident 偶然,意外地

例句:

Ⅰ. It was not to be believed.
This piece had to be an accident. It had to be.

Ⅱ. The gun went off by accident .

 

6) access (N./V.) 通道;使用途徑;(接近某地或某人的)機會(或方法);(使用某物的)權利;讀取(電腦資訊)

例句:

Ⅰ. The home is situated within easy access of shops and other facilities.

Ⅱ. There's a stimulative effect that kicks in when women have greater access to jobs and the economic lives of our countries: Greater political stability

 

7) abnormality (N.) (通常指身體的)反常,異常,變態,紊亂

例句:

Ⅰ. Genetic abnormalities are more often associated with faults in paternal DNA than in maternal DNA.

Ⅱ. Caitlin was born with a life-threatening heart abnormality. 

 

8) accomplish (V.) 完成;實現;達到;做到

例句:

Ⅰ.They are skeptical about how much will be accomplished by legislation.

Ⅱ. Nonetheless, the developers of the Chinatown garage are confident with the technology and are counting on it to squeeze 67 cars in an apartment-building basement that would otherwise fit only 24, accomplished by removing a maneuver space normally required.

 

9) account  (V./N.) 帳戶,戶口;報導;報告;記述;描述;賒銷帳;賒欠帳;賒購;客戶;主顧;認為是;視為

例句:

Ⅰ. He figured up the balance in their checking account.

Ⅱ. What we have to do is make sure we know what these are and take into account all the possible variables

 

10) by your own account 據(某人)自己所說

例句: By his own account, he's quite wealthy.

 

11) on account of sth 由於,因為

例句:

Ⅰ. A newly-married couple, he thought, on account of their walking so close together. 

Ⅱ. He doesn't drink alcohol on account of his poor health.

 

12) be of no/little account不重要;無足輕重

例句:

Ⅰ. On investigation, no structural abnormality or other sign of disease can usually be identified to account for the dysmotility. 

Ⅱ. Trickle-down "economics" might be valid in theory, but no system of economics can account for human greed.

 

13) be brought/called to account 被責令(對…)作出解釋;受到追究

例句:

Ⅰ. Westerners believe that all hatred will be remembered and brought to account.

 Ⅱ. But the culture is changing - and increasingly people are demanding that their leaders be brought to account.

例句:

15) on no account 決不,絕對不;切莫

例句:

Ⅰ. In my opinion on no account can we identify wealth with happiness  

Ⅱ.On no account should they simply stop taking the medicine.
