Listen to a conversation between two students.  

Woman : Say, Lenny, do you know anyone who wants a cat?      

Man:  A cat? No, why?      

Woman : Well, this poor little cat showed up outside my apartment one day. He was hungry and cold, so I gave him some cheese, and now he’s still hanging around. My landlord found out and said I have to get rid of it because pets aren’t allowed.      

Man: You shouldn’t be feeding it. If you stop giving it food, it will go away.      

Woman : I know, I know, but he’s so hungry. I like the cat, and I want him to have a good home. Actually, I’d like to keep him myself. M: Well, if that’s the case, then you’d better look for another apartment---one that allows pets.      

Woman : I hate to do that. My apartment is so close to campus.      

Man: Why don’t you give the cat to your mother? She likes animals.      

Woman : My mother already has two cats, so I don’t know----      

Man: Well, you’d better do something fast, or your landlord will throw you out.      

TASK: Describe the women’s problem and the suggestions the man makes about how to solve it. What do you think the women should do and why?      

Sample answer: 

The woman gives food to a hungry cat near her apartment, but the cat can’t live there. The woman’s apartment is not allowed for any pets, so he has to do something with pets. The man suggests the woman to find another apartment which allows for pets. But the woman thinks her apartment is close to the campus. The man also suggests the woman to give cat to anyone else. The woman can’t find this people. I think the woman should give pet to anyone else, because it is good for cat.

Listening Part:       

Listen to a conversation between two students.      

Man:  Hey, Jennifer. How are things going?      

Woman : Well, I’m relieved this is the end of semester. But that’s actually part of my problem.      

Man:  What do you mean?       

Woman: Can you believe this? My computer broke yesterday. So it’s at the shop being repaired. It won’t be read y until the end of n ext week which is when all my papers are due.      

Man:  Why not use the computer lab? They’ve got lots of machines there.  

Woman: I know. But it gets so noisy there that I can’t keep my mind on my work. I mean, when I’m at a computer, I’m not just typing. I’m thinking! So I need quiet to concentrate.     

Man:  Maybe you can try going in the morning or evening. It might be less noisy then.      

Woman : Maybe. But this time of year, everybody’s working on papers. It could be crowded even then.      

Man:  Hmm. What about calling back the computer rep air shop to see if they can have your computer read y at the beginning of next week instead? That would still give you enough time to finish your papers by the end of the week.     

Woman : Oh! I haven’t thought of that! The only problem is the shop is closed today and tomorrow for the long holiday weekend. So it’ll be a few days before I can talk to them.      

TASK: The speakers discuss two possible solutions to the woman’s problem. Briefly summarize the problem, then state which solution your recommend and explain why.

(1.1) Problem: woman needs to finish her paper but computer is broken and being repaired in the shop      

(1.2) Solution 1: go to the lab to do her work      

(1.2.1) Pro: plenty of machines to use      

(1.2.2) Con: it’s crowded; too noisy to concentrate      

(1.3) Solution 2: wait for her own computer to be repaired      

(1.3.1) Pro: no need to work amount the crowed in the lab      

(1.3.2) Con: has to wait after the long holiday weekend to find out      

Sample answer:      

The woman’s problem is that her computer is broken and being repaired in the shop, now she can’t finish all her papers in time. There are two possible solutions here. The first one is that she can go to the computer lab to do all the work. The second is waiting for her computer to be repaired. I would use the computer lab to do my work if I were her. First, this way she won’t waste anytime on the weekend, and there is no guaranty that the repair shop can get her computer ready as early as the beginning of next week. Second, she can choose a time when the lab is less noisy to do her work, such as early in the morning or late in the evening.
